Hi, I'm Edward!

I'm the tutor behind Everbright Dyslexia Tutoring, and I'm really glad you're here!

When I first meet a child, I’m not just thinking about where they are in their reading journey; I’m thinking about how they feel about reading. For many of the students I work with, reading has become something they associate with stress, frustration, or even embarrassment. My first goal is always to change that experience.

I want tutoring to feel like a safe space where a child can take a breath, slow down, and realise that they can succeed even if reading has felt difficult for a long time. That might mean starting with small, achievable steps, celebrating progress that may seem minor on the surface, or simply giving them the time they’ve never really had in a busy classroom.

My lessons are structured and intentional, but they’re also warm and human. I don’t believe children learn best when they’re worried about getting things wrong. I believe they learn best when they feel supported enough to try, confident enough to make mistakes, and comfortable enough to ask questions without hesitation. There’s always space for encouragement, humour, and those little moments where something suddenly “clicks” and you can see their confidence shift in real time.

One of the most rewarding parts of this work for me is watching that change happen not just in reading ability, but in how a child sees themselves as a learner. A student who once hesitated to read a single sentence out loud slowly starts volunteering to try. A child who used to say “I can’t do this” starts saying “let me try again.” Those moments matter just as much as the academic progress.

I also believe strongly that no two children learn in the same way. That’s why I take the time to get to know each student properly, not just their reading level, but their personality, their interests, and what makes them feel confident or unsure. The more I understand the child, the better I can tailor each lesson so it actually makes sense for them.

At its heart, I see tutoring as a partnership. I bring structure, experience, and guidance, but the child brings curiosity, effort, and their own unique way of learning. My job is to meet them where they are and help them move forward in a way that feels steady, supportive, and achievable.

Every child I work with reminds me that progress doesn’t always look dramatic from the outside, but it always matters. And being part of that journey is something I genuinely care about.

Training & Qualifications

Helping a child develop stronger literacy skills requires an understanding of how reading works, where difficulties can arise, and how those skills can be taught in a way that is structured and meaningful.

My training combines specialized education in the Orton-Gillingham approach with a strong academic background and a commitment to continuing my education as a literacy tutor.

Orton-Gillingham — Level 1

My training includes areas such as:

  • Phonemic awareness — recognizing and working with the individual sounds within words

  • Phonics & decoding — understanding the relationship between letters and sounds and applying that knowledge when reading unfamiliar words

  • Encoding & spelling — helping students translate the sounds they hear into written language

  • Syllable patterns — breaking longer words into smaller, more manageable parts

  • Multisensory instruction — incorporating visual, auditory, and hands-on elements into learning

  • Structured progression — introducing skills in a logical sequence and building new concepts on previously mastered material

  • Review & reinforcement — revisiting important concepts so skills have the opportunity to become increasingly automatic

This training provides the foundation for the individualized literacy instruction I offer at Everbright.

Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) — Accounting

University of Manitoba

My university education may come from a different field, but it has shaped many of the skills I bring into my work as a tutor.

Completing an honours degree required years of disciplined study, organization, critical thinking, and problem-solving. It taught me to take complicated information, break it into manageable pieces, recognize patterns, and approach challenges systematically.

Those same qualities influence how I prepare for tutoring. I value being organized and intentional with each lesson, paying attention to progress over time, and continually thinking about what should come next for an individual learner.

Business Administration Diploma — Accounting

Red River College Polytechnic

My diploma in Business Administration provided an additional foundation in communication, organization, planning, and analytical thinking.

It also helped develop something I value greatly in teaching: the ability to take information that initially seems complicated and present it in a way that feels organized and approachable.

Committed to Continued Learning

My education as a tutor doesn't end with one course or qualification.

Literacy instruction continues to develop as we learn more about reading, dyslexia, and how children learn. I am committed to continuing my professional development, expanding my knowledge, and refining the instruction I provide as Everbright grows.

For parents, that means working with a tutor who takes both your child's learning and his own continued learning seriously.
